The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.
“The grace of the Lord Jesus”
As Paul so aptly put it in Ephesians 1:2 “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. This lesson will continue with the keywords from Revelations 22:21 above, the grace of the Lord Jesus…
In this lessons theme verse (see above) we find that the grace or favor being spoken of is that grace or favor being wished as a blessing to the Ephesians and us, which emanates from the Lord Jesus.
It is taught or thought that Jesus means Savior. A name prophesied and given to Christ when he was born to the virgin Mary in fact being the divine son of God.
We know Jesus as God The Son, who is eternal He was in existence before the world was created and is said to have been active with God in the creation of all things.
Lord is said to mean master a title of respect. It is a title equally worthy of use for God the Father or God the Son. Accepting Jesus as our Lord and Master is essential for our redemption from the curse of sin.
In the beginning paragraph of this lesson note the title was expanded from Lord Jesus to Lord Jesus Christ in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.
The name Christ means anointed one and designates one chosen for an important purpose. The title Christ identifies Jesus as the anointed Son of God, the true Messiah and Savior of the World. Christ was a title but also became a personal name for Jesus. Jesus was his earthly name while Christ was his eternal name. Christ is the Greek word for the Hebrew word Messiah. The Jews to whom Christ was sent rejected him. Therefore the Gospel message or grace and favor of the crucified and resurrected Jesus became a mainstay for Christian Gentiles or non-Jews.
In verses 3-14 Paul praises God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who resides in the heavenly realms, for every spiritual blessing we receive from Christ.
The text note for the third verse of Ephesians Chapter one explains the relationship of father to son and the heavenly realms from which they originate like this:
Father of our lord Jesus Christ:Jesus’ relation to God the Father is unique.God is father both of Christ and believers but in different sences… membership in Gods family is based on grace alone─ the gift of God is never a human achievement man must receive and believe that Christ is Gods Son who became flesh was crucified died and was resurrected as their redeemer.
As for God’s blessings to us through Christ: they come through our thanks praise and acceptance of the gospel message of God’s Son.
The phrase Heavenly Realms occurs four more times in addition to Ephesians 1:3.
Ephesians 1:3─[ Spiritual Blessings in Christ ] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
Ephesians 1:20─ which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,
Ephesians 2:6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
Ephesians 3:10─ His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,
Ephesians 6:12─ For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
These Verses tell us God dwells in the heavenly realm with Christ from whom every spiritual blessing comes. And Christ is seated at the place of honor at Gods right hand. Through our faith in Christ God took us from spiritual death to spiritual life in Christ. This union of salvation with and through Christ’s shed blood expresses Gods grace and mercy towards humanity.
Not only were gentiles united to God through faith in Christ in the heavenly realm. But on earth God through Christ united his chosen faithful Christ redeemed remnant nation of Israel and Christ redeemed gentiles into a body called the church.
The fact that God had done the seemingly impossible─ reconciling and organically uniting Jews and Gentiles in the church─ makes the church the perfect means of displaying God’s wisdom to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realm over whom God had exceedingly exalted Christ. And the church is the bride of Christ the union of major spiritual power.
It is this spiritual power that God provides to the seekers and fully arms them with the word and the full armor of God. Human power alone will never defeat the authorities and spiritual forces of evil. Flesh and blood is weak and without power to prevail.
The Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
