The Key word for Lesson 2 of the 1st verse of Genesis is God.
I can do no better than to borrow and use the information on God in my copy of “The Student Bible Dictionary”
No definition or explanation of God can capture and define him with complete accuracy or justice. Volumes have been written and nothing can really capture the essence and grandeur, magnificence, impressiveness, eminence, splendor, richness, importance, majesty, immensity, greatness, or vastness of God the father son and Holy Spirit!
God is the eternal One without beginning or end (Ex. 3:14). The uncreated One who created everything and everyone, (Gen 1:1; John 1:1-3). He is One (Deut.6:4-9); yet He reveals Himself to us as three in One: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Matt. 3:16-17). He is characterized by His creative work, the grace of His loving mercy, His intolerance of sin, His forgiveness of people who turn from sin and trust Him, and His guidance for quality living (Gen 1:31; Eph. 2:8-10; Rom. 6:22-25; 10:9-10; John 3:16; 10;10).
The way to come to know God the Father and God the Spirit is to come to know God the Son, who is Jesus Christ (John 14:15-20). God is all-powerful, all-knowing and all-loving.
NAMES FOR GOD
The Bible uses many names for God and each one describes something about His character, abilities, or the way He relates to us. These first six are Hebrew words that are translated into English in the Bible.
ELOHIM- God Majesty, Mightiness, Unchanging love (Gen 1:1).
Elohim, is The One who brought order out of chaos; God’s name “Elohim” describes Him as the one true God. It stresses God’s Almighty Mind and Creatorship. This name is used to describe God Who wants a covenant relationship with His people. Elohim is a plural form of a Hebrew word with a singular meaning. It could also be used for idols and false god’s.
YHWH– Often translated Lord; God’s personal name (Ex. 3:14; Col 1:15) God is both loving and righteous and must therefore judge evil. YHWH expresses God’s moral and spiritual attributes of love, holiness and righteousness.
EL SHADDAI– God Almighty who is able to carry out His own will and purpose (Gen. 17:1; 2, Cor. 6:18). His strength is made perfect in our weakness. El is translated God and primarily means might or power.
God gives or pours out Himself and His power for the sake of others.
EL ELYON – Most High God (Gen. 14:22; Rom. 3:29). El means God as in El Shaddi. Elyon refers to the special and distinct nature of God, that He is the highest God ruling all other heavenly beings and superior to all beings claiming to have divine power. Though God made us human beings like God in many ways, He and only He has the power to rule, possess, and be exalted above all other beings, powers and elements of creation.
ADONAI – Lord (Gen. 15; Ps. 8:9; Acts 9:6). This term is distinct from YHWH and focuses on God’s personal relationship to us, He as Creator and us as created. It highlights the characteristics of both a master/slave (ownership) and a husband/wife (together forever) relationship. God takes care of our needs and is sufficient for us. When Israel came to believe the divine name YHWH was too holy to pronounce, they spoke the word Adonai whenever they read YHWH. They inserted the vowels of Adonai into the text to remind them to say Adonai. The combination of consonants of YHWH and the vowels of Adonai produced the word Jehovah, a word the Jews never said.
EL OLAM – Everlasting God or God of the Age who reveals Himself to persons (Heb 1:1). He works in time to help us understand Him, how to serve Him, how to act as His people.
God’s Spirit Lives within all Christians to help them communicate God’s truth to them, convict them of sin, convince them that God’s ways are right, and comfort them when they are sad (John 15:26;16:7-8, 13-15). The Holy Spirit is also known as the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, the Counselor, the Helper.
Christ promised to send the Holy Spirit to guide us after he left the earth to return to the Father (Luke 24:49). The Holy Spirit gives gifts and Godly characteristics called fruits of the Spirit (Rom. 12:4-13: 1 Cor 12-13; Gal 5:22-23) to each Christian.
The Way (John 14:6); The Truth (John 14:6); The Life (John 14:6); Good Shepherd (John 10:11); The Light (John 1:7), Bread of Life (John 6:35); Immanuel (Isa. 7:14); Savior (2 Pet. 3:18); Wonderful Counselor Isa. 9:6); Mighty God (Isa. 9:6); Everlasting Father (Isa. 9:6); Prince of Peace (Isa. 9:6); The Word (John 1:1); The Resurrection (John 11:25); Lord (Matt. 8:8); Son of Man (Mark 2:28); Son Of God 1 John 4:15); God (John 20:28)
