Yesterday I presented Bonus #1 the text was John chapter 9 verses 1-12. I ended Bonus #1 by saying that Bonus #2 would be a continuation of this parable which was not told by Jesus but was lived out by him.
You are in this parable. Can you find yourself?
THE PHARISEES INVESTIGATE THE HEALING JOHN 9:13-41
The Pharisees asked the now sighted man how he had received his sight. His reply was: “He put mud on my eyes (Symbolic of earth or dirt from which man was formed, mixing with the Spirit of Christ which brings healing to sinful man.) I washed and now I see.”
After the application of spittle to the eyes JESUS SENT, the man to the Pool of Siloam (Siloam means “sent”) After following the command of Jesus to “GO” and “wash” the man returned home SEEING. Also note at this point the formerly blind man referred to Jesus as a “he.”
Not yet seeing the blind man must exercise his faith in Christ’s eye-salve and take action. He stumbles blindly to the Pool of Siloam and then removes the mixture from his sinful (blind eyes). His faith in obeying Christ’s command and his action of washing allowed him to return home SEEING.
Infant Christians, just like the blind man, must exercise faith in Christ by having their spiritual blinded eyes opened by a sign of faith in their deliverance from spiritual blindness.
As they “go” and are dipped “washed” under the baptismal waters, (some sprinkle, some apply water to the forehead… not a point of contention for me.)
The BAPTISMAL WATER signifies the washing away of the blind sinful man who has now accepted by faith that Christ is their sin bearer, Christ is their victor over physical and spiritual death, Christ defeated the devil and his minions, Christ rose from death and now sits at the right hand of God His Father interceding with him on our behalf. The infant Christian relies on God’s graceful sacrifice of his only son and the promise of eternal life.
Why, should Christ be looked on as a Savior?
Some Pharisees said “This man is not from God. Why? According to Pharisaic law, Jesus broke a man-made law of mixing and applying spittle on the Sabbath.
because he keepeth not the sabbath day:
this they concluded from his making clay of spittle, and spreading it on the blind man’s eyes, which was contrary to the traditions of their elders: one of whose rules and canons is F14, that
“It is forbidden to put fasting spittle even on the eyelid on a sabbath day.”
T. Hieros. Sabbat, fol. 14. 4. & Avoda Zara, fol. 40. 4. & T. Bab. Sabbat, fol 108. 2. & Maimon. Hilchot Sabbat, c. 21. sect. 25.
The Pharisees after hearing the reply of the formerly blind man were divided. Some said “This man does not keep the Sabbath and is not from God”. Others asked, “How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?
They finally asked the formerly blind man “What do you say about him? It was your eyes he opened.
He replied HE is a PROPHET. The “he” in verse 15 is now elevated to a Prophet by the Jewish man who now “sees”.
The Jews did not believe he was the former blind man and had been healed. They sent for his parents to confirm his claim.
Is this your son who was born blind? They asked. How can he now see?
Yes he is our son; he was born blind; how he can see we do not know; ask him he is of age; he will speak for himself.
These answers were given for fear of being put out of the synagogue by these pious Jews.
Once again they called for the formerly blind man and pressured him by saying. “Give glory to God; we know this man is a sinner.”
He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
“What did he do to you?” they asked. How did he open your eyes?”
“ I have told you; you did not listen”. “Why do you want to hear it again?” Do you want to become his disciples too?” Now not only is Christ a Prophet but the formerly blind man is now Christ’s disciple. What progress this infant Christian is making. He is proceeding, “From faith to faith”.
Romans 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written , The just shall live by faith.
The Pharisees insulted the blind man. You are His disciple. We are Moses disciples, We know God spoke to Moses this man we do not even know where he comes from.
The man answered, now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he came from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the Godly man who does his will. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God he could do nothing.”
Talk about having an eye-opening experience now not only is Jesus no longer “he” nor is Jesus just “‘a prophet” but a prophet from God to whom discipleship is owed.
“You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!’ and they threw him out. (excommunicated him from the synagogue).
They were correct in saying that the Blind man was steeped in sin from birth we are all blind sinners until the spirit takes hold and gives us the wisdom to accept Christ as the sight-giver.
The Pharisees were so full of their selves that they missed recognizing the very Messiah for whom they said they were waiting and for whom they were searching.
Jesus heard that the Pharisees had cast his new disciple out of the synagogue when he found him he said,”Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
Who is he, sir? The man asked, “Tell me so that I may believe in him.
Jesus said for judgment I have come into the world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”
Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, What? Are we blind too?”
Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
Have you found yourself yet.
Are you still blind? Have you allowed the eye-salve to be put on your eyelids?
Have you heard that some Disciples of Christ you serve with look upon misfortunes of others as signs of sinfulness in their lives? Have you or they judged the blind rather than engaging them with the grace of God (eye-salve) and asking Christ to heal their blind eyes.
Have you made it clear to the one to whom eye-salve has been applied that they must be ready to take action and exercise faith so that not only are their eyes open but they mature from “He” to disciple who recognizes that Christ is the way to salvation and is indeed the divine son from and of God.
Are you a blind neighbor who thinks the change made by Christ in your newly sighted neighbor requires your interference? Are you anxious to take him to a more competent blind authority?
Are you a frightened, and cringing, compliant, conforming, parent who knows and yet rejects their child in the face of threatening authority figures? Are you more concerned with your status than the welfare of your child.
Are you a pious religious authority who is more concerned with rules and laws, power and position than the truth?
Would you look upon the messiah for whom you have spent a lifetime searching and fail to understand him when he informed you: If you were blind and ignorant and without the means and methods of knowing and recognizing the Messiah. You would have no sin. Because you are witness against your selves in my Company; claiming to have perfect sight and understanding you have no excuse or remedy for your sinful blindness.
