Flesh and Spirit – Passage #1

Our first lesson on flesh and Spirit will be from the Passage of scripture

MY WORDS ON HE WINGS OF A DOVE!

found in Isaiah 31:3:

Isaiah 31:3 (New International Version, ©2010) But the Egyptians are mere mortals and not God; their horses are flesh and not spirit. When the LORD stretches out his hand, those who help will stumble, those who are helped will fall; all will perish together.

I have borrowed from John Gill’s Exposition on this verse and his words and thoughts are below. John Gill preceded Charles Spurgeon as pastor of the same church 100 years before Spurgeon pastored there.

Now the Egyptians [are] men, and not God
Be it that they are mighty, they are not mighty, as God is; and indeed they are but frail, feeble, mortal, and mutable men, and therefore not to be trusted in, and depended on; or to be put upon an equality with God, and even to be preferred to him, as they were by the Jews; and of what use and service could they be unto them, seeing God was against them?

(In my words as a paraphrase to Gill’s words.) Though the Egyptians possessed power politcally, militarily, financially and otherwise they were poverty-stricken by comparison to God.

God is immortal by contrast Egyptians (all flesh or all mortals) are decaying and dying second by second.  In no single way is a meer mortal close to comparable to Immortal God.

Our eyes and minds can be deceived into seeing or believing that the wealthiest and politically or socially elite are to be revered and respected on an equal or superior level with God. This mistake is one of idolatry.

God abhors anyone who gives superiority to any idol be it man, money, power or anything else. God disowned and abandoned the Jewish people because they put these and other man-made things before him.

Do not think this is a antisemitic remark as God has always and still does have special plans for Israel. God is for anyone jew or gentile who earnestly and honestly puts Him and His word and teachings above all things.

and their horses flesh, and not spirit;
only flesh, without an immortal soul or spirit, which man has; and therefore a foolish thing in man to trust in them, (horses) who must be entirely guided and directed by them; and much less angelic spirits, or like them, which are incorporeal, invisible, and exceedingly mighty and powerful, which excel all creatures in strength, and are called the mighty angels; these are God’s cavalry, his horses and chariots; see ( Psalms 68:17 ) ( Habakkuk 3:8 Habakkuk 3:15 ) and what mighty things have been done by them, even by a single one? Witness the destruction of the Assyrian army, in one night, by one of them; wherefore the Egyptian cavalry was not to be named with them

(Again My paraphrse)Man has a chief advantage over all animal flesh. He was made in the image and likeness of God. God breathed his spirit into man. That spirit is available to all men.

As powerful as horses are, to be of benefit to man, they must succumb to the authority and guidance that comes from men.

Likewise to be of benefit to God men must be broken and trained by God.

By contrast to man God does have a powerful hoast of angels who serve and worship him. I can do no better than to refer you back to Gills remarks on these powerful servants of God: …and much less angelic spirits, or like them, which are incorporeal, invisible, and exceedingly mighty and powerful, which excel all creatures in strength, and are called the mighty angels; these are God’s cavalry, his horses and chariots; see ( Psalms 68:17 ) ( Habakkuk 3:8 Habakkuk 3:15 ) and what mighty things have been done by them, even by a single one? Witness the destruction of the Assyrian army, in one night, by one of them; wherefore the Egyptian cavalry was not to be named with them
